A life behind the lens
Al Hillman picked up his first camera at the age of 9 and a camera has rarely been out of his hands since.
What was once a childhood hobby quickly became an all-consuming passion. Self-taught in his teenage years, he eventually studied photography at Ryerson University, and was mentored by such master photographers as Lyle McIntyre, David Zizer, Alain Briot and John Paul Caponigro.
Portraiture and wedding photography provided the first foundations of his business as a professional but his talent soon found a greater outlet in his love of fine art and nature photography. Over the years his work has been published in PHOTONews Canada and won awards from the Professional Photographers of Canada association.
Whether it is the majesty of a great blue heron in flight, the excitement of an amusement park or the drama of a storm on the horizon, Hillman captures the essence and the emotion in a single scene. Each of his photographs is meant to ultimately connect the viewer to a place and time within themselves that they can revisit with pleasure again and again.
“Viewing the world from behind my lens, I explore angles, space, reflections and light in the natural environment around me and to acknowledge the beauty that surrounds us. Many of my most striking images are a compilation of several exposures to increase the dynamic range of each photograph. These images capture what the eye can see, which far exceed what the camera can record with a single exposure.” – Al Hillman
